What the new UK eVisa System Means for International Students Starting September 2025

What the new UK eVisa System Means for International Students Let’s face it—planning to study in the UK already comes with a lot to think about. And just when you’re getting excited about your offer, you start hearing about things like visa timelines, passport submissions, and biometric appointments. But here’s the good news: the UK is making things easier. Starting July 15, 2025, the visa process for International students from countries like Nigeria and Ghana is going digital. That means no more visa stickers in your passport, no long waits to get your documents back, and far less stress overall. Effective July 15th, 2025 — A Digital Shift Begins The British High Commission in Abuja has announced that, starting July 15, 2025, most Nigerians applying for study and work visas to the UK will now be under the new UK evisa system. They will start receiving UK eVisas rather than the physical visa stickers (vignettes) previously stamped into their passports. And this isn’t just for Nigeria—Ghana and several other countries are also on track for this global transition. 🚫 No More Waiting for Passport Stickers If you’ve ever paused your travel plans because your passport was “still at the VAC,” this change will feel like a gift. With the new system: You keep your passport after biometrics. Once approved, your visa becomes digitally linked to your passport. You get notified by email. You can use the UKVI portal to view, prove, or share your immigration status online. No paper. No stamps. No back-and-forth waiting. Why the UK Switched to an eVisa System The UK Home Office is moving toward a fully digital immigration system by 2025. The goal? More security, better accessibility, and fewer logistical hiccups—especially for international students and professionals who travel often. For students from Ghana or Nigeria—who already face long wait times, varying processing speeds, and unpredictable embassy queues—this is a clear win. Who Needs to Know about the new UK eVisa System? Let’s break this down by scenario—because depending on when you apply and what type of visa you’re going for, your experience will differ. 1. You applied before July 15, 2025 If your visa application (for study or work) was submitted before July 15, you will still follow the traditional process: You’ll receive a physical visa vignette (a sticker in your passport). You must submit your passport at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) after biometrics. Your visa will be issued and returned to you with the vignette attached. No digital eVisa will be issued for these applications—even if your travel date is after July 15. You’re locked into the old system. 2. You apply on or after July 15, 2025 This is where things change. If you’re applying for a study or work visa from July 15 onwards: You will no longer receive a physical visa sticker. Your visa will be issued digitally, and you’ll keep your passport after biometrics. Once approved, your visa will be linked to your passport electronically in your UKVI account. You’ll receive an email confirming your eVisa has been granted, along with instructions. This applies to applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, and several other countries now included in the UK’s global eVisa rollout. 3. You’re a visitor, dependant, or short-term applicant If you’re applying as a: Visitor (Tourist) Short-term student Dependant of a main applicant …then you will still receive a vignette. These categories are not yet part of the eVisa system. However, the UK Home Office has stated that the plan is to fully transition all visa types to digital by 2025. So this may change soon. Before You Fly: Key Checklist for International Students Even though you won’t have a visa sticker in your passport, you still need to be properly prepared to travel to the UK. Here’s how to make sure everything is in place: 1. Set up your UKVI account You’ll be invited to create a UKVI account during the application process. This is where your eVisa will be stored. Make sure the passport number in your account is correct and matches the passport you’ll travel with. Any error—even a digit off—can delay your entry at the UK border. Tip: If you renew your passport after receiving your eVisa, you must update your UKVI account with the new passport details. 2. Check your email frequently Once your application is approved, you’ll receive an email from UKVI with: Confirmation of your visa grant. A “share code” you can use to show proof of your visa. Instructions for accessing your eVisa online. Save this email, print a copy if possible, and keep it handy when you travel. 3. Confirm your travel eligibility with the airline Most airlines are now familiar with the eVisa system, but some may still ask for evidence that you’ve been granted a UK visa. You can show your: Share code eVisa confirmation email Or a screenshot of your digital visa from your UKVI account For Nigerian and Ghanaian students especially, double-checking with your airline (e.g., British Airways, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines) before your travel date is smart—it avoids last-minute issues at the airport. 4. Use the “View and Prove” Tool The UK has created a digital tool called “View and Prove Your Immigration Status”. This allows you to: Access your visa details anytime. Share your immigration status with your university, accommodation provider, or future employer. Print or save a digital record of your visa if needed. CONCLUSION This update might seem like just another policy change—but it’s much more than that. For African students dreaming of the UK, it’s a step toward ease, autonomy, and digital convenience. A less stressful journey. One less thing to worry about as you prepare to start a new chapter in a new country. So if you’re reading this and planning to study in the UK soon—breathe easy and let us assist you to ensure your study process is seamless.

UK Immigration Changes 2025: What International Students Should Know

The UKVI has just released a new immigration whitepaper outlining proposed UK immigration policy changes in 2025. While these measures are not yet law, they bring major implications for international students planning to study, work, or settle in the UK. These policy shifts could affect every stage of your journey, from securing a UK study visa to post-study work and even permanent settlement in the UK. Understanding these UK Immigration Policy Changes is essential to avoid pitfalls and plan your future effectively. Reduction of Post-Study Stay Duration The post-study work opportunity, currently known as the Graduate Route, which allows international students to stay up to 2 years (or 3 years for PhDs) post-study, may be reduced to 18 months. Implication for Students: With a shorter window to find work or switch visas, start planning your post-study pathway early. Consider options like the Skilled Worker visa, PhD progression, or other sponsored routes. Higher English Language Requirements New and stricter English language benchmarks may be introduced for both main applicants and dependants. Students will have to meet higher English language requirements, for example, higher IELTS or PTE scores. Implications for Students: Schools may take a stricter approach to English Certificate verifications. Current C6 WAEC English acceptance may require a higher pass mark to be accepted or they may need to sit for for IELTS and have a higher band score . Previously, pre-CAS interviews were overlooked by some institutions. Moving forward, pre-CAS interviews may become extremely necessary with a cap for the number of student intakes, as seen by the revoking of Harvard University’s License to admit international students in the United States. Settlement Timeline Extension The qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) may be doubled from 5 years to 10 years. This however, does not include years spent studying (if you are on a study Visa) or working. Staying in the UK on a Visa that does not qualify for ILR does not count as a requirement for your ILR. Settlement and citizenship may be based on a new contribution-focused points system. Implication for Students: If your goal is permanent residency, plan for a longer stay under various visa categories and actively contribute (via skilled work, tax, etc.) to accumulate settlement points. Stricter Regulations for Educational Institutions The UK is looking to tighten regulations for institutions sponsoring international students. Institutions nearing compliance breaches will be placed on action plans. A cap will be imposed on the number of international students they can admit during this period. Implication for Students: Before applying, verify the compliance status of your chosen university or college. Partnering with trusted agents like Negxy Concept Limited ensures you avoid blacklisted or restricted schools. Higher institutions will become stricter in their application requirements for the English Language. Summary of Implications for Prospective Students (If Implemented) Area Change What to Do Graduate Route Reduced to 18 months Plan post-study visa transition early School Sponsorship Stricter rules & caps Choose verified institutions with clean track records English Requirements Raised for students & dependants Prepare thoroughly for English tests Settlement ILR now after 10 years Plan long-term journey carefully If you are still in the process of making a decision as to whether the UK is a good study destination or not, speak with our licensed counselors who can walk you through all the details, such as course selection, admission processing, visa application, post post-study work options. Trump is Back in Office – What This Means for You as an Aspiring International Student

How Trump’s Return Affects Your Study Abroad Plans The news is everywhere, Donald Trump is back in office! Whether you saw it coming or not, one thing is certain: the policies shaping international education in the U.S. are about to shift. And here’s the catch: you’re not the only one thinking about your next move. With stricter visa rules and uncertainty in the U.S., more students—especially from India, China, Africa, and other parts of the world—will start exploring alternative study destinations like Canada, the UK, and Australia. But these countries have quotas, limited university slots, and visa caps. This means more competition for the same opportunities. If you’ve been thinking, “I’ll just apply to the UK instead,” know that thousands of others are thinking the exact same thing. The time to plan strategically is NOW. Let’s break down what’s happening, what it means for your study plans, and how to stay ahead, especially now that Trump is back in office. Stricter Visa Rules – The Process Just Got Tougher Expect increased scrutiny on student visa applications, longer wait times, and more rigorous checks on financial and academic documents. If you were hoping for an easy ride, brace yourself—securing a U.S. visa may now require extra patience, more documentation, and a stronger case for your study plans. What this means for you: Visa interview officers might become stricter, requiring more proof of intent to return home after studies. Renewing visas or changing statuses (like switching from a student to a work visa) could be more difficult. With thousands of students potentially shifting away from the U.S., competition for visas in Canada, the UK, and Australia will also heat up. Possible Travel Bans – Some Students May Be Affected One of Trump’s most controversial policies in his previous term was travel restrictions on certain countries. If similar policies return, students from specific regions may face hurdles entering or reentering the U.S. What this means for you: If your country is affected, traveling back home during your studies might become a gamble. Restrictions may force some students to defer or rethink their plans. Job & Work Limitations – What About Post-Graduation? For many students, studying in the U.S. is about more than just a degree—it’s about building a career. Programs like Optional Practical Training (OPT) allow international students to work after graduation, but under Trump, these could face new restrictions or reduced timeframes. What this means for you: Fewer work opportunities after graduation. Increased competition for employer-sponsored work visas (H-1B). If your goal is to work in the U.S. post-graduation, it’s time to explore backup plans. What About Canada, the UK & Australia? While the U.S. tightens its borders, other study destinations may become even more attractive. But with this increase in demand, getting accepted into top schools and securing visas will be more competitive than before. ✅ Canada: Already a top choice, Canada offers easier visa processing, post-study work permits (up to 3 years), and smoother pathways to permanent residency. But with more students eyeing Canada, expect higher student demand and tougher admission criteria. ✅ UK: The Graduate Route allows students to stay and work for up to 2 years after finishing their degree (3 years for PhD holders). If you’ve been wondering how this recent update affects you as a prospective student, this is the clarity you’ve been waiting for. On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) process in Nigeria shifted entirely from TLScontact to VFS Global. This change raised several questions: What happens to my pending application with TLScontact? How do I start a new application on the VFS Global portal? Will this impact my plans for the January 2025 intake? If these concerns have been keeping you awake, you’re not alone. But the good news is that you’ve found the answers right here—and you don’t have to navigate this process alone. Please keep reading to learn precisely what this change means, how to handle pending applications and new submissions, and how our visa experts can guide you. What’s Changed in the UK Visa Process? New Applications Since November 19, all UK visa applications must now be made on the VFS Global portal. TLScontact is no longer accepting new submissions. Pending Applications If you submitted your application on the TLScontact platform before November 19, rest assured it is still being processed. UKVI has confirmed that TLScontact will continue handling these applications until completion, after which results will be transferred to VFS Global. Documentation and Appointments Verify that all your documents meet the UKVI requirements and schedule any necessary appointments promptly through VFS Global. Ensure that emails are from legitimate sources ending in @tlscontact.com or @vfsglobal.com. Track Your Application: You can no longer track your application via your online TLScontact account. If your application takes longer than the UK Visas & Immigration standard processing times, it is advisable to contact UKVI directly. Prepare for Collection: Once notified, be prepared to collect your travel document from the designated VFS Global Centre. Ensure you have all necessary identification and documentation. If you submit your application through TLScontact before the November 19th deadline, it will continue to be processed without disruption. However, if you have yet to apply, you’ll need to do so through VFS Global, the new service provider for UK visa applications.
