The NFQ (National Framework of Qualifications) is a level system. Each level is based on a set of nationally agreed-upon knowledge, skill, and competency standards.
There are six types of major award available in Ireland at these levels:
- NFQ Level 7 = Ordinary Bachelor Degree (3 years duration)
- NFQ Level 8 = Honours Bachelor Degree (3-4 years duration)
- NFQ Level 8 = Higher Diploma (1-year duration)
- NFQ Level 9 = Postgraduate Diploma (1-year duration)
- NFQ Level 9 = Masters Degree (1-2 years duration)
- NFQ Level 10 = Doctoral Degree (approximately 4 years duration)

IRELAND STUDENT VISA
A student visa is a special endorsement added to a government passport that is given to students with admission to approved educational institutions. Prospective study abroad student who wishes to go for higher education in another country must first get a student visa from that country.
The type of visa a prospective study abroad student should apply for to study in Ireland depends on the length of the degree that they intend to study. There are two types of the Irish student visa, they are:
- C-type study visa
- D-type study visa
C-type study visa – This student visa is for any study programme that lasts less than 3 months (90 days)
D-type study visa – This student visa is for any study programme that lasts longer than 3 months.
