Education in Cyprus has its peculiarities that results in the rising of international students from over 50 countries around the world. However, there are some disadvantages. Let us take a look at these advantages and disadvantages of schooling in Cyprus.

ADVANTAGES OF SCHOOLING IN CYPRUS

Study gaps are accepted in Cyprus.

The main reason why international students study abroad in Cyprus is that Universities in Cyprus accept up to 10 years of study gap. A student of 35 years can be granted admission, regardless of age.

Affordable tuition fee.

A student would not need hundreds of thousands just to get into a university in Cyprus as universities are affordable. The tuition fee for a year might not be more than 10,000 euros and school fees payments can be paid monthly.

The cost of living in Cyprus is reasonable.

In Cyprus, things are not overpriced, groceries, transportation, housing, food and lodging are cheap and affordable. For example, you can rent a three-bedroom flat just for 800-900 Euros. Also, communications and telephone services are considerable.

DISADVANTAGES OF SCHOOLING IN CYPRUS

The absence of a graduate immigration route.

Unlike the UK that has a graduate route system where graduates are eligible to stay back after graduation to work, an international student who graduates from a university in Cyprus, have no options to stay back.

In the UK, international students who study for a bachelor or a masters degree can stay back for 2 years, an international student who studies for a PhD degree can stay back for 3 years.

Ireland is also a better country to study in, as students are also eligible for a post-study visa, however, students cannot travel to Ireland with their family except they are studying for a PhD degree.

Travelling with dependents is not allowed.

Most prospective study abroad students prefer schooling in countries where they are allowed to live with their family members as they study, unfortunately, dependent visas are not granted to international students in Cyprus. Dependent visas are not also granted in Ireland but they are granted in the UK. A student can travel to the Uk with his/her family to study, no matter the number of family members, as long as proof of funds is provided.

Working while studying is only allowed after 6months of arriving in the country

In Cyprus, an international student can only work after 6months of arriving in the country.

International students in Cyprus are not allowed to do any kind of jobs until 6 months of arriving in the country, this is because students are only allowed to work after they get their work permit, and it takes six months for a work permit to arrive. Even after you get a work permit, there is no guarantee of a job.

High profile jobs aren’t open for international students

International students in Cyprus can hardly get high profile jobs (professional jobs) even after graduation, no matter how knowledgeable and experienced they may be in that field. This is so because most of these jobs are already reserved for Cypriots and Europeans. It is possible to get good employment in Cyprus if a student has completed their bachelors and masters degree there but one should not even consider going for an interview if they are still doing a bachelors degree.

Also, the government assigned fewer working hours to international students who plan to work while studying. They are only allowed to work for 20 hours per week during the semester and 38 hours per week during vacation periods.

However, in the UK, International students are allowed to work for 20hours per week during the semester and full time during vacation periods. It is also important to know that in a reputable country like the UK, It is difficult for an international student with a degree from Cyprus to find good employment In The UK and other leading countries.

Cyprus is officially called the Republic of Cyprus, it is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The Republic of Cyprus is a European nation that has not yet joined the Schengen area.

The Schengen area signifies a zone where 26 European countries abolished their internal borders, for the free and unrestricted movement of people, in harmony with common rules. Since Cyprus has not yet joined the Schengen area, it will be hard for international students who may want to go on trips, to travel to other Schengen countries.

However, they can easily go to countries like Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia as these countries are also not in the Schengen Area. Other than that, it is very difficult to get a tourist visa for other European countries.

Before a prospective study abroad student decides to get an education in Cyprus, the student should thoroughly weigh the advantages and the disadvantages of studying in Cyprus to make a decision based on what is most beneficial to them.

On the other hand, the UK is on the top list of the 10 best countries to study in Europe, with benefits like the graduate route, working full time during the holiday period, being able to apply for a dependent visa, payment of school fees in instalments throughout the studies year, working while studying on arrival at the UK and most especially, the ability to get good employment in any country with a UK degree etc
