Thinking about studying in New Zealand to earn a bachelor’s degree, pursue a master’s programme or take the next step in your career? New Zealand could be the study destination you’ve been considering.
With internationally recognised universities, opportunities to work while studying and post-study work options for eligible graduates, New Zealand offers more than just a qualification.
But before making the move, there are important things to know about tuition fees, admission requirements, living expenses and the student visa process.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through what you need to know to study in New Zealand from Africa and how to get started.
What makes New Zealand worth considering for your international education?
Beyond its beautiful scenery and welcoming environment, the country offers several opportunities for international students.
These opportunities make New Zealand an option worth exploring, particularly if you’re looking for an education that supports both your academic and professional goals.
New Zealand has eight universities offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Some universities you can consider include:
You can explore programmes in Business Administration, Information Technology, Nursing, Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Public Health, Agriculture and other fields.
When can you start studying?
February and July are the two major admission intakes in New Zealand. Some institutions also offer additional intakes in September, October or November, depending on the course.
While having several universities to choose from is exciting, finding one that matches your qualifications, career plans and budget is what matters most.
One of the first questions you probably have is, “Am I qualified to study in New Zealand?”
The answer depends on what you want to study and the university you’re applying to.
For undergraduate programmes, universities generally assess your secondary school qualifications to determine whether you meet their entry requirements.
If you’re considering a master’s degree or another postgraduate programme, you’ll typically need a recognised bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
When preparing your application, some of the documents you’ll commonly need include:
Beyond these, your chosen course and university will determine what else you need to provide.
For instance, some programmes request a statement of purpose or academic references, while others may require a portfolio, research proposal or interview.
You may also need to demonstrate English language proficiency. However, this doesn’t automatically mean every African student must take IELTS. Some institutions accept other recognised tests or alternative evidence, depending on their admission policies.
The important thing is to understand the requirements for your particular programme rather than assume every university follows the same process.

Before choosing a university, it’s important to understand how much studying in New Zealand might cost.
Your overall budget will depend on your programme, institution, accommodation and lifestyle.
According to the official Study with New Zealand website, international students can expect the following indicative tuition fees:
| Study Level | Estimated Tuition Fees |
| Bachelor’s Degree | NZD 35,000–55,000 per year |
| Postgraduate Degree | NZD 20,000–45,000, depending on the programme |
These figures are estimates, and certain programmes may cost more. Your chosen university will provide the actual tuition fee for your course.
Some universities also offer scholarships to eligible international students, which may help reduce the cost of studying.
Apart from tuition, you’ll need money for accommodation, feeding, transport, utilities and other personal expenses.
For student visa purposes, tertiary students generally need to demonstrate access to at least NZD $20,000 for one year of study, or NZD $1,667 per month for courses lasting less than one year.
Remember, this amount is separate from your tuition fees and may not cover all your actual living expenses.
You should also plan for visa application fees, insurance, flights and other relocation costs.

Getting admission into a university is an important milestone, but you’ll also need the appropriate student visa before travelling to New Zealand.
For most African students paying international tuition fees, the Fee Paying Student Visa is one of the available options.
To be eligible, you’ll generally need:
Depending on your circumstances, Immigration New Zealand may also request medical reports, police certificates or additional financial documents.
Another important aspect is demonstrating that your study plans are genuine. You should be able to explain why you’ve chosen your course, how it connects to your academic or career goals and how you intend to fund your education.
Students applying from outside New Zealand may also be eligible for an Approval in Principle (AIP) arrangement, which allows them to defer tuition payment until an initial positive visa assessment.
However, visa requirements and financial documentation can vary depending on your circumstances.
You can find the official requirements on the Immigration New Zealand website.
